Adult Literacy Program

The Adult Literacy Program is Project Liwanag at Dunong's flagship initiative. Its primary goal is to help community members obtain an Alternative Learning System (ALS) Certificate of Completion for Basic Education.

Why it was developed

The program grew from research findings and community interactions that highlighted low educational attainment among many adults. This creates a significant obstacle to supporting children's learning at home.

Foundational skills for everyday life.

01

Pagbasa sa Filipino

Building confidence in recognizing, understanding, and using Filipino words and texts.

02

Reading in English

Supporting beginning readers through clear, gradual, and personalized practice.

03

Basic numeracy

Developing practical number sense and mathematical skills used in everyday situations.

The program continues to be adjusted around the competencies needed to complete basic education.

Delivered with teachers and volunteers.

The program is delivered in partnership with the Manila Public School Teachers Association (MPSTA), which regularly deploys volunteer teachers on Sundays for learners at Beginning, Developing, and Intermediate Levels. Individual volunteers also provide personalized guidance for beginning readers, facilitate educational activities with children, and assist with research tasks.

10ALS completers supported

Since the program began in April 2023, it has helped ten community members achieve elementary and secondary education through the Alternative Learning System.

The program is now expanding efforts to train Aeta teachers from the pool of ALS completers so they can lead supplementary weekday classes for beginning readers.
